All of Los Cabos is talking about one of  the newest resort to hit the shores of Cabo San Lucas. The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, opened in July 2015 and is located at km 5 on the Tourist Corridor at Monuments Beach. Once inside the impressive entrance gates, it is luxury personified, from the expansive lobby to the top of the roof on the sixth floor.

Architect Javier Sánchez of JS Arquitectura in Mexico City, interior designer Marisabel Gómez Vazquez, and Mexican ceramicist Jose Noé Suro have collaborated to utilize the very best of this famous beachfront property. The idea was to create a contemporary style imbued with Mexican artistry in an unending flow between indoors and out using natural elements. A life-sized whale sculpture made from salvaged driftwood greets guests upon entering the open-air spacious lobby. Comfortable hand-crafted furnishings are made of hardwoods, leather and brass and are contrasted with hand-painted tilework. In the center of the lobby is a large sunken bar. There is also the Glass Box bar with floor-to-ceiling glass walls with air conditioning.

From the sixth-floor rooftop guests can indulge in signature cocktails created by food and beverage manager, Osvaldo Vazquez, the  hotel’s award-winning Mixologist. From this top-of-the world platform, one can take advantage of the jaw-dropping view of the Sea of Cortés and the iconic arch at land’s end. Comfortable sofas, poufy floor chairs and draperies create conversation spaces with chic sculptured lamps shedding just enough light for intimate indulgence in signature cocktails, house spirits and Japanese whiskeys from the centered round bar. The alfresco sky garden surrounded with walls of glass, and interspersed with fire pits and planter-sized water ponds offers luxurious relaxation without limits.

There are 161 rooms at The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, each with an unobstructed ocean view. Guests can choose between two pools, one with fresh water with swim-up bar, and another with salt water in a natural rock formation. Hotel rooms have private balconies, some with private plunge pools. Manta is one of the several restaurants within the hotel with a double entendre: manta ray focuses on seafood and the Spanish interpretation meaning blanket, or comfort, serving an infusion of Mexican and Pan-Pacific cuisine. Celebrated chef Enrique Olvera, a 2015 James Beard Foundation Award finalist, overseas the 114-seat restaurant. A more casual eatery is The Ledge offering Tex-Mex fare at the beach. www.ThompsonHotels.com/LosCabos.  — Sandra A. Berry.
