While Los Cabos and the beaches that made it famous are enjoyed by many, there are other stretches of idyllic bliss in the Cape region, not far from the explorer’s reach. The East Cape Region extends from several miles east of San Jose del Cabo along the Sea of Cortez, to north of Punta Pescadero, Los Barriles and Rancho Buena Vista. All are names long popular with fly-in fishing diehards; but perhaps not so familiar to many others.

That’s changing as more people discover this region where quiet hideaway hotels coexist with new restaurants, supermarkets and private residential enclaves. Just an hour by paved Highway 1 from Los Cabos International Airport, the north end of the East Cape is attracting both devoted seasonal veterans and an increasing number of first time visitors.

Some say the East Cape hubs of Buena Vista and Los Barriles, magnificently situated on Bahia Las Palmas, are the Los Cabos of twenty years or thirty ago. Famous for its gamefish, Bahia Los Palmas stretches from Punta Pescadero south to Punta Arena Sur.

“Also, included in the East Cape package, just to make sure you know that much of this area is part of “The Real Baja”, is a terribly bumpy dirt road that runs for about 50 miles along the Sea of Cortez coastline. The road is bad, but not so bad that a regular car will get stuck or have clearance problems. Just be really careful and be ready for a rough drive. If a hurricane or tropical storm has visited the area recently, check with someone locally before you get halfway and have to turn back. Make sure you have a usable spare tire and a good jack. A can of instant tire repair is highly recommended”.

Tourism in the East Cape area got started in 1952 when the Rancho Buena Vista Hotel opened as a fly-in fishing resort. A runway was built in the arroyo next to the hotel, which was fine as long as the storms stayed away. This became a regular vacation stop for the Hollywood elite and as the word about this remote paradise spread, the East Cape area started gaining popularity.

Blue and black marlin are plentiful from June to December, and the area explodes as the fishing resort crowd moves in. Roosterfish, yellowtail, wahoo and tuna are also abundant. Whatever your expectations, rest assured, there are miles of isolated coastline, pristine waters and an ample array of sports and activities for every taste, from diving to boardsailing.

Buena Vista 
Fishing is still big in Buena Vista, much as it was in the glory days of the Peninsula when Baja legend Ray Cannon called Rancho Buena Vista home. Although the fish are not as thick as they were in those old days, this beautiful fish trap still has plenty of fish to go around. There are a few small (yet wonderful!) beach side hotels in the area, but other services are just basic (no Home Depot or big box stores)…yet. Cabo Pulmo National Park – Parque Nacional Cabo Pulmo
With more than 7,000 hectares of sea, Cabo Pulmo is considered an international treasure, being a National Park where fishing is prohibited, in order to protect and take care of it, at the moment it is contemplated an infinity of fish in reproduction, that throws like result The increase of 400% of fish, compared to figures in 15 years ago. On June 15, 1995 President Ernesto Zedillo declared the 7,111 hectares and waters surrounding Cabo Pulmo a National Marine Park.

Caduaño 
Caduaño is a small town located north of the municipality of Los Cabos, approximately 15 minutes from the International Airport of San José del Cabo, the meaning of Caduaño is “Cañada Verde”. It has practically all the urban services, there is a Police subcommand, a small Catholic Church, Garbage collection, Public square, Kindergarten, Elementary school. Caduaño is renowned for its delicious traditional homemade fruit candies. There is now a water park, Parque Acuatico – Wild, Wet Fun aquatic Park.

El Cardonal Baja
The small town of El Cardonal is located in the Municipality of La Paz (in the State of Baja California Sur). There only a few hundred inhabitants. There is access to a nice beach area across from the Mini Super El Cardonal.

La Ribera East Cape Baja
A beautiful tourist destination belonging to the municipality of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, in the area of Cabo del Este. It has a population of about 2000 habitants, mostly dedicated to fishing, or works related to tourism. Other activities you can do are hiking, camping, biking, or just doing nothing and just throw yourself in the sand to rest. La Ribera is ideal for holidays, relax, rest and forget the rest of the world to spend an unforgettable stay.

Los Barriles 
Besides sport fishing, wind surfing is highly popular. There are also exciting quad rides along the hills up to several beaches with transparent water where you can snorkel or relax for a while before returning to Los Barriles. Off road racing is also highly practiced in the surrounding areas. The town’s history dates back centuries when a half-dozen young Englishmen supposedly deserted a whaling ship after having been shanghai’d from back home. There are huge extensions of desert beaches where you can walk along dirt roads and see with nomad surfers and young travelers who arrived to explore this remote corner in Mexico.

Los Frailes
The small town of Los Frailes is located in the Municipality of Los Cabos (in the State of Baja California Sur). Los Frailes is 20 meters above sea level and front along part of Bahia Los Frailes.

Miraflores
Also belonging to the municipality of Los Cabos, this small Town is considered part of Cabo del Este. It was founded in 1700 by French sailors. Formerly called old ranch, but due to the abundance of flowers and beautiful women was called Miraflores. Aside from tranquil streets, casas and lots of semi-tropical vegetation, the real charm of Miraflores is its simplicity, honesty and easy-going ambience as its existence doesn’t depend on tourism. Photo on right shows the Catholic Church at Mira Flores.

Punta Pescadero
This area is the home location of Punta Pescadero Paradise Hotel & Villas resort, about 9 miles north of Los Barriles, on the East Cape, in the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, and 96 km. north of the San José del Cabo International Airport.

Santa Anita
This is a small town belonging to the municipality of Los Cabos, is located about five kilometers from the International Airport of San Jose del Cabo. The overall population of Santa Anita is 920 persons, 456 of them are male and 464 of them are female. The town is very small but has what is needed. There is a church, a small town square, a park and playground for children, and a health center.

Tropic of Cancer Monument
The new Tropic of Cancer monument Tourist Plaza or Plaza Turistico Trópico de Cáncer, is located just outside of Santiago, on Mexico Highway 1, at Km 81.5, and celebrates the northernmost of earth’s three important lines of latitude. This monument replaced smaller, less impressive marker that had previously denoted the 23.5N parallel, and it currently serves as the center-piece for a tourist attraction,
